The Jack o lanterns are here

On Saturday we found a variety of pumpkin prices at the farmer's market, I was very happy to find a vendor selling pumpkins 2 for $5.  They were pretty big, but a bit picked over.  We still managed to find two pumpkins we were happy with and last night we carved them!

Do you have your Jack’o’Lantern yet?

Last week I decided I really wanted to make a cute Halloween bag and decided applique was the best method to accomplish it.  This is my first applique project ever.   I used a couple different methods for the applique.  First I used this method for the pumpkin and pumpkin stem hand stitching them down and using the machine for additional detail, then I used a two-sided paper backed fusible interfacing for the eyes and mouth, followed up with a zig-zag around each face element to hold it in place and hopefully prevent fraying.

And I'm proud to say that all the primary supplies for this project was stuff I had at home.  The striped fabric was literally scraps leftover from another project, as is the stem fabric, and the pumpkin, eyes and mouth fabric were bits of fat quarters I had.  Unfortunately I did need to go buy some thread and two-sided fusible interfacing to complete the project.  I just drew jack'o'lantern faces by hand until I had something that I liked both face and size-wise.  I taped it to my window during a sunny day in lieu of a light-box to trace some of the pieces (eyes and mouth).

But I still need to buy a pumpkin (or three) to carve before Wednesday.

11 months to candy corn season

I generally don't get into halloween until it is nearly upon us.  Yesterday I had a brief thought of dressing up but then decided I didn't want to spend a day's effort for a handful of trick-or-treaters.  Other than a lone pumpkin I purchased a couple weeks ago (I know better than to wait until the day before) I didn't pull out my meager halloween decorations until last night.

And I just, I do mean just, carved my pumpkin.  At 6 pm on Halloween night.  At first I was waiting so it wouldn't go bad, then I just didn't feel like it.  Finally I decided on a pumpkin theme and used a cookie cutter to make a pumpkin with star cut-outs.  If you haven't tried one of those pumpkin carving kits with the wussy looking little saws and flat plastic pumpkin guts spoon I suggest you do.  I purchased mine a couple years ago for like 50% a couple days before halloween and was simply amazed at how easy it was to carve the pumpkin.

Of course, I am all about the Halloween candy.  The month of October is Candy Corn month.  But not Target candy corn, that is very icky; Brach's is decent.  And since SlytherinLibrarian raved about the combo of candy corn and peanuts I decided to try it today (when I was out buying plastic spiders for decorating purposes I had to get my last bag of candy corn for the season).  Yum.  Sort of like eating a payday candybar.
